Care and Repair Update

Care & Repair officially started with one officer on 22 June 1998, and has as its aim “the provision of assistance to elderly or disabled owner-occupiers or private sector tenants, to have repairs, improvements or adaptations organised which will help them to remain in the safety and comfort of their homes.

At 31 March 2009, the project had received 14,622 enquiries and completed 1,950 works cases, 2,285 advice cases and 8,462 small repairs.

Clyde Valley Housing Association were successful in obtaining the tender for a revised service and have now agreed a 2 year contract with North Lanarkshire Council to deliver a Care and Repair Service for 2009-11.

Clyde Valley have successfully managed the Care & Repair Service for the past 11 years with the support of North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire.

The service will be delivered to 5200 owner-occupiers or private tenants who are either older people, disabled or the parents or guardians of disabled people.

The Service will provide:

  • Help with identifying building repairs and maintenance issues;
  • A Competent Contractors Scheme will provide service users with names of tradespeople who have been vetted by Care & Repair to carryout repairs, maintenance and improvements;
  • Advice and referral to other agencies such as Welfare Benefits, Citizens Advice, Handyperson Service; and
  • An in-house Small Repairs Service, which carries out minor joinery, electrical or plumbing repairs that can be completed in no more than 2 hours. Service users will require to be a £10.00 administration charge plus the cost of materials for each small repair.

Care and Repair is a project aimed at elderly and vulnerable people in North Lanarkshire, who own their homes. During the year the Project provided advice to a number of people in relation to projects and also obtaining funding for works to their homes. Some of the works carried out to people’s homes included the addition of ramps, fixing and replacing windows and doors and heating systems.

The Project also has a Small Repairs Service, who assisted with small jobs around peoples homes, including fixing leaky taps, changing fuses in plugs, and building shelves. No job was too small for the Team, who outperformed all of their targets as detailed below.
